US detains 130 Iranians

(MENAFN) US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained 130 Iranian nationals in the past week amid growing fears of potential retaliation on American soil following recent US airstrikes on Iran, Fox News reports. The US, alongside Israel, targeted three major Iranian nuclear facilities last week, and Tehran retaliated with missile attacks on a US base in Qatar before a ceasefire was reached.

The White House has raised alarms about possible sleeper cells within the US being activated, prompting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to issue a warning about a “heightened threat environment.” Among those arrested, some have criminal records, and at least one was a former member of Iran’s military. Currently, around 670 Iranian nationals remain in ICE custody awaiting immigration proceedings.

One notable detainee, Ribvar Karimi, a former Iranian serviceman who immigrated to the US last year via a visa for foreigners engaged to American citizens, was arrested in Alabama shortly after the strikes for failing to update his immigration status following his marriage. His wife, Morgan Karimi, said he supported Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

ICE Director Tom Homan emphasized the importance of Trump’s immigration approach during the current conflict with Iran, criticizing the Biden administration for creating what he called a significant national security vulnerability. Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court recently upheld a Trump-era policy allowing the deportation of migrants to third countries despite previous legal challenges.
