Egyptian FM states Egypt is working on Gaza truce

(MENAFN) Egypt’s foreign minister announced on Sunday evening that the country is actively pursuing a new arrangement for Gaza, centered on a 60-day truce. The proposed plan would involve the release of several Israeli hostages in exchange for the immediate flow of humanitarian aid into the heavily blockaded territory.

“We’re working toward a durable solution and a permanent ceasefire,” Badr Abdelatty said during a televised interview on a local channel.

The foreign minister explained that the initiative is a joint diplomatic effort involving Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. He described the plan as “a first step” toward achieving a sustainable and long-term ceasefire.

“What’s on the table now is a 60-day truce in exchange for the release of a number of Israeli hostages and the swift delivery of aid to Gaza, including medical supplies,” he added.

Abdelatty emphasized that this phase is intended to build momentum toward a more permanent resolution and the eventual implementation of the agreement outlined on January 19.

He underscored that the current proposal is just an initial phase and that the real objective remains the complete cessation of hostilities. “There is an American vision and understanding of the importance of including guarantees in any upcoming agreement to ensure the sustainability of a ceasefire,” he noted.

The minister cautioned that a return to violence by Israeli forces would represent a serious risk to the broader region. “A resumption of (Israeli) aggression would pose a major threat to regional stability,” he warned.

The January 19 agreement, which was brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, introduced a three-stage ceasefire framework between Israel and Hamas, aiming to eventually put an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
